Purley Festival are proud to announce THE ORIGINAL ACES plus THE CIYO BROWN BAND as the first headliner to be confirmed for the 2017 festival. The Original ACES, one of the most iconic vocal groups in Jamaican musical history, has reformed and joins forces with guitar man Ciyo Brown and his band, bringing the sounds and vibes of the golden era of Ska and Rocksteady to Purley on Sunday June 2.
The super tight harmonies of the Original Aces featuring Barry Howard and Carl St Clair, plus new member Black Steel, first came to the world’s attention through their ground-breaking work with Desmond Dekker.
Desmond Dekker & The Aces were the first Jamaican reggae artist to achieve a number 1 chart hit record in the UK and Europe with ‘Israelites’. Hit after hit followed, including ‘007’, ‘It Mek’, ‘Unity’ and many more, securing The Aces a unique place in Jamaican and world musical history.
Ciyo Brown’s guitar contributions and collaborations feature on a host of live and recorded work with the great and good of the reggae world including JC Lodge, Sugar Minott, Bob Andy, Earl Chinna’ Smith, Barry Biggs, Dennis Bovell, Pam Hall, Jimmy Lindsay, Earl 16, Kofi, Winston Reedy, Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson.
Ciyo has toured with Courtney Pine, Byron Wallen, Maxi Priest, Beres Hammond, Horace Andy, Cleveland Watkiss, Steel Pulse and a host of others. A formidable guitarist, band leader and musical director, Ciyo’s groove and choice of musicians ensures there is a beating heart through every moment of the show.

PURLEY FESTIVAL SHAPING UP FOR THE SUMMER!
Following a fallow year in 2016, Purley Festival is BACK, full of energy and ready to make the 2017 event better than ever.
The organisers are pleased to announce that Purley Festival has started the New Year as a Community Interest Company, having registered with Companies House just before Christmas. The new status comes after a successful year of restructuring for Purley Festival, which since it started in 2010 has been run by the community for the community and has become a highlight of summer in Croydon since the first festival was held in 2011.
Purley Festival Community Interest Company will operate for the benefit of the community in providing a grassroots Arts and Music festival for local people to enjoy and will also put on events throughout the year if there is grassroots interest. The festival’s mentoring scheme will give people the chance to gain confidence, work experience and new skills.
This year’s weekday programme will run from 26-30 June and the weekend event will take place on 1 and 2 July at the Rotary Field in Purley. The Purley Festival committee will be developing exciting events and activities during the week and free attractions at the festival’s weekend finale.
Attractions lined up for 2017 include a ‘Cinema in the Park’ on Friday 30 June; a silent disco; a climbing wall; street cocktails; and walk around performance artists – in addition to a kids’ area and three distinct stages of entertainment.
A record number of musicians and performers have applied to perform at Purley Festival 2017 and we will soon be announcing this years musical line up.
Purley Festival has always supported a number of charities and this year is proud to be partnering with South East Cancer Help Centre (based in Purley) and Marie Curie; and once again will be working with the Purley Rotary Club who will be providing stewards and support.
Sunrise Senior Living and Hawke Financial Services are gold sponsors of this year’s event, which is also supported by Frost Estate Agents. Local businesses on the look out for advertising opportunities, stall holders with unique products, and volunteers who would like to help out can all get in touch through the Purley Festival website.
Fiona Lipscombe, Purley Festival Director says: “We are delighted that Purley Festival is now a Community Interest Company. It has always been run for the benefit of local people but it is nice to put this on an official footing so that the festival continues to provide access to music and the arts for local people of all ages and backgrounds.
We will also continue to provide opportunities to people who would like to join the team and help shape the direction of Purley Festival. Thank you to all of our supporters during our conversion to a Community Interest Company. This is a very exciting time for Purley Festival and we look forward to returning after a year off and putting on a bigger and better event than ever before!”
